Fort Bend History Association: A Timeline
The Fort Bend History Association was founded in 1967 as the Fort Bend County Museum Association.
1963
The initial survey committee is formed.
1964

Mamie George donates $25,000 to fund the initial survey committee.

1967
The Fort Bend County Museum Association is chartered.
“The purpose for which the corporation is formed is to support an educational undertaking and to support and maintain a place where historical, patriotic, civic, educational and other scientific collections may be housed [and] to increase and diffuse a knowledge and appreciation of history, art and science,” the charter document reads. The Association’s purpose was also to preserve objects with historic, artistic and/or scientific interests and to offer “popular instruction and opportunities for education and esthetic enjoyment.”

1969

Judge John Moore gives the Association the land on block 89 in downtown Richmond.

1971
|
The City of Richmond dedicates a historic marker and flag poles on the Association’s land.

1972
The Fort Bend Museum opens.
1975
|
The Museum acquires the 1883 Moore Home and the Fort Bend Museum Docent Society is formed.

1977
|
The Association acquires Decker Park in historic downtown Richmond.

1981
|
The Candlelight Tours begin.

1984
|
The first Texian Market Days festival is held.
|
1985
The George Foundation asks the Association to develop educational programs at the George Ranch Historical Park.
The Junior Docent program begins.
1988
The George Ranch Historical Park opens.
1991
The Association is one of only three Houston-area museums to receive full accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums.

1993
The Fort Bend Archeological Society has its first meeting.
2000s
A major initiative begins to digitize the Association's collections.
2001
|
A chuckwagon lunch is offered (for the first time) on Saturdays at the George Ranch Historical Park.

2003
|
A grant is awarded to the Association that enables the creation of the Texian Time Machine.
|
2006
|
The historic Dew House is moved to Kitty Hollow Park, and the Association is contracted to guide the refurbishment of the home.

2011
|
The historic Dew House opens for tours.
|
2014
|
|
The Association holds lectures and a reenactment to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Jaybird-Woodpecker battle.
